Domain Hosting

I’m currently writing a long article on domain hosting – everything you need to know about starting a website and choosing a hosting company. Follow me on twitter and I’ll let you know when it’s published (probably sometime in late 2013).

In the mean time here are answers to the 2 most common questions I get.

What is the best place to buy a new domain name?
I like using GoDaddy to buy new websites (but not to host them). But you should never go directly to GoDaddy – or any other company – to buy your domain name. If you do you’ll be paying too much.

If you go directly to GoDaddy, search for your domain name, and click buy you’ll pay somewhere between $12.99 and $14.99.

Instead, go to Google.com, search for “Cheap Domains” or “Buy a Domain”. At the top of the search results page you’ll see a text ad that says something like, “$0.99 Domain Names – Limited Time – Compare Us – GoDaddy.com‎”. Click it.

This will take you to GoDaddy through a special link and you should be able to buy your domain for $1.99 or $2.99. It’s always changing and never seems to be the $0.99 they advertise but it’s still a lot cheaper than paying $15.

What is the best website hosting company?
This is a tough one. There are a lot of hosting companies – lots of lousy ones, but many good ones too.

My two favorites are:

BlueHost (for sites just starting out) and WPEngine (for more established sites that need great response time and support).

They both have great customer service and are easy to use and setup.

Hope that helps. Good luck.
